Good news; there are no entry requirements for this course, other than being over the age of 18! You need to make sure your Sports Massage course is a fully accredited qualification that is recognised by an awarding organisation (AO). Our Sports Massage course is awarded by Active IQ, the leading AO in the Active Leisure sector, they make sure our courses are delivered and assessed, and our learners are supported to the highest standards possible, something that we take pride in!
Once qualified, you need to make sure you get some insurance and affiliation with professional bodies such as the Sports Massage Association will certainly help you gain clients.
All of your learning materials, including an Active IQ manual, can be accessed via the eLearning portal. Hardcopy manuals can be purchased at an extra cost.
The course covers a range of specialist areas including:
- Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
- Palpation (locating through touch) of bony landmarks, ligaments, origins and insertions
Sports massage techniques, including
- Petrissage and pressures
- Muscle energy technique
- Assessing clients and treatment planning
- Assisting tissue repair
- Providing professional practice
- Providing post-treatment care
After completing your home study, you will attend 8 practical course days, which will be four 2-day attendances, each weekend evenly spaced (this will allow you to practice your skills at home after each weekend before coming back to learn more!) Tutors will observe you practicing and give specific feedback on your techniques. The practical assessment will be on day 7/8 of the course.
Course attendance will be at one of our training centres throughout the UK.
In order to successfully complete this course, assessment will include the following:
- Home-study worksheets
- Multiple choice theory paper
- Observed practical assessment
Your home study should usually be completed over a period of 4-8 weeks and then your 3 weekends will be scheduled approximately 4 weeks apart to allow you to practice what you have learnt in between. Therefore it will take between 12 and 16 weeks on average.
